You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

Step 1

Start by outlining the basic shape of the thermometer. Use a long and curved line to create an irregular shape. Note that it is widest at the top and that it slopes slightly before a sudden decrease in width.

Step 2

Draw a curve through the bottom of the thermometer. This portion is called a spherical bulb, and it contains mercury or other chemicals used to measure the temperature.

Step 3

Stretch a long curve from the top of the spherical bulb. When it gets close to the top of the thermometer, fold it in half until it reaches the bottom of the device. This forms a capillary tube, through which mercury flows as it heats up.

Step 4

Draw a line across the capillary tube. This marks the height at which the liquid inside the thermometer has reached.

Step 5

Draw a long curve around the capillary chamber, meeting it just above the spherical bulb on both sides. This represents the area over which the thermometer graduation lines are marked.

Step 6

Draw a set of straight, long, parallel lines on the lower half of the capillary tube. Surround a circle to connect them at each end. This forms a shadow on the thermometer's curved glass.

Step 7

Draw a pair of lines along the upper part of the capillary tube. Connect them with a circle at each end.

Step 8

Draw short straight segments along one side of the capillary tube. These are graduations that allow you to accurately read the temperature.

Step 9

Use the curved lines to draw a curved, pointed shape at both ends, across the tip of the thermometer. Near the tip of the thermometer is marked with the degree symbol (a small circle) and the letter "C." This indicates that the thermometer is marked with degrees Celsius. Also, if you live in the United States, Belize, Bahamas, Cayman Islands or Palau, you can replace "C" with "F" for degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 10

Color your cartoon thermometer. Mercury has a natural silver color, but the thermometer liquid is often dyed red. Some thermometers have a green liquid.
